As a general proposition, the copyright on each story posted to Portland Stories is held by the individual author (or authors) of that story.

Stories submitted prior to November of 2005 are owned by their respective authors and cannot be used without their permission.

Stories submitted after November of 2005 are governed by the terms of the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 license from Creative Commons. Under the terms of that license, material originating on Portland Stories (if submitted prior to November of 2005) may be reproduced without specific or prior arrangement as long as the following conditions are met:

As the license indicates, none of the above conditions for republication in any way affect other rights under copyright law, such as your right to fair use.
