The Fake Millennium And The True Century At The Lucky House

Denk didn't like to be introduced as my landlady. But she was, so I did it. Denk did like Stephen Jay Gould. I was surprised that she got involved in all the Y2K madness surrounding January 1, 2000 ce, because Dr. Gould had made it very clear in his column that the real millennium would begin a year later. But she did, and she was upset when some time around midnight she discovered that she was the only one in the back of the paddy wagon who was experiencing an altered state of mind.

A few hours earlier, the fellow at the Lucky House selling the sugar cubes for a dollar each had found clients, whose opinion I solicited. "What's up," I asked.

Rider gave me a pair of big-eyes and said, "the first letter of the alphabet." Denk looked at him quizzically, and corrected him.

"'L' is not the first letter of the alphabet, Rider," she said. The police came later. The real century of the Lucky House, according to the Oregon Historical Society, is in late September. There is no reason to expect police or sugar cubes. Stephen Jay Gould has passed away.
